Do THIS to Have a Great College Visit
So, you’re thinking about college. You’ve scrolled through websites, watched videos, maybe even browsed a few dorm room tours on TikTok. But nothing—absolutely nothing—compares to stepping foot on campus. A college visit lets you see beyond the brochures and truly experience what life is like at a school.
The problem? If you don’t go in with a plan, you might leave with more questions than answers.
Want to make the most of your visit? Do THIS:
1. Schedule a Visit That Works for You
Don’t just show up and wander around. Well, at least don’t start that way (more on that later).
Schedule an official campus visit through the college’s website. Many schools offer personalized visits where you can sit in on a class, meet professors, and perhaps even stay overnight in a dorm (although this is less common after COVID-19). Try to visit during weekdays when students are on campus so you can get a real feel for student life.
2. Ask the Right Questions
A college visit isn’t just about seeing the buildings—it’s about making sure the school is the right fit for you. Here are some key questions to ask:
✔️ What is the student culture like on campus?
✔️ How does the school help students find internships and jobs after graduation?
✔️ What is the student-to-faculty ratio?
✔️ What is included in the cost of tuition, and what extra fees should I expect?
✔️ What do students do for fun on weekends?
(Pro tip: Jot down notes during and after each visit. After you visit a few schools, they can start to blur together!)
3. Explore Beyond the Tour
Campus tours are great, but don’t stop there. Now is the time to wander around on your own. Walk through the student center, check out the library, eat lunch in the dining hall, or strike up a conversation with a few students. If possible, attend a student event to see what the community is really like.
4. Picture Yourself There
This might be the most important part of your visit. Can you see yourself walking these paths every day? Does the campus feel like home, a place you would love to live for eight months?
If you’re unsure, that’s okay—keep visiting other schools until you find the right fit.
5. Follow Up and Reflect
Once you are back home, take time to process your experience and compare your notes with the other places that you have visited. Talk to your parents or mentor about what stood out to you. If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to the admissions team—they are always there to help!
